AEEP Forum 2023: Building Brides for Green Growth

Africa-Europe energy relations are more important than ever, not only to boost economic development in Africa, but also to ensure energy security in Europe and jointly fight climate change. To take stock of the successful bi-continental collaboration to date and further align on shared priorities and a vision for the future, the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) is hosting the third annual AEEP Forum under the theme: Building Bridges for Green Growth – Africa-EU partnership for climate compatible energy access.

The AEEP Forum will be hosted as a side event at the Africa Climate Summit, at the KICC, in Nairobi, Kenya, on 4 September, at 16:30-17:30 EAT. To participate in person, register at the official Africa Climate Summit website. There is also an opportunity to follow the event via a live stream online by signing up here: AEEP Forum 2023.

For the past 15 years the two neighboring continents have worked together to secure affordable and reliable energy for all Africans. Guided by Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the African Common Position on Energy Access and Just Transition, Africa is paving the way for a comprehensive approach to charting Africa’s short, medium, and long-term energy development pathways. The EU’s Global Gateway Investment Package, and the Africa-EU Green Energy Initiative, support these efforts through initiatives that aim to increase electricity production, access to electricity and a conducive regulatory environment for private investments. The Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) actively supports the implementation of these joint actions for a green energy transition. The successful bi-continental collaboration is already contributing towards the implementation of ongoing initiatives such as the Continental Power System Master Plan (CMP) and creation of the Africa Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) - important building blocks for climate compatible energy systems.

More ambitious commitments and interventions are, however, needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the 2030 while at the same time fighting climate change. The AEEP Forum will convene high-level representatives from Africa and Europe to discuss a vision for the partnership in the years to come, how to scale up renewable energy and find finance options that can achieve both access to sustainable energy for all (SDG7) and climate action (SDG13) in a true partnership of equals with mutual benefits.
